What is Object type!!!

There are several functions that wants their parameters to be an type.............

What does this object type refers to?

Is it such that the parameter the function expects is not a datatype specific;i.e, if an object type parameter is expected then i can place an integer,a decimal or a string or something else as its parameter?

I need to clear my basics....
